Driving Agility in Financial Services: How Fexco Built a Secure, Automated Data Foundation for Global Scale

Founded in 1981 and headquartered in Ireland, Fexco is a premier global financial services provider managing mission-critical currency exchange, payment solutions, and business services across multiple international markets. Operating in a highly regulated industry requires absolute data security, strict governance, and continuous auditability.

However, as the company scaled across four decades, its core data applications remained tied to legacy infrastructure and manual processes. These manual setups created operational bottlenecks, limited system visibility, and slowed down product deployment. To maintain its competitive edge in a rapid, digital-first fintech landscape, Fexco needed to transition from a rigid infrastructure model into a highly secure, automated, and scalable cloud environment. Partnering with Searce, they embarked on a comprehensive transformation on Google Cloud Platform (GCP) to turn their data infrastructure into a strategic growth engine.

The Challenge

Fexco's operations and technology teams wanted to move away from legacy automation and data pipeline tools to modern cloud based tools.

  • Manual Deployments: In part, Fexco's data, reporting, and application pipelines were deployed manually or through legacy tools. This human-dependent process introduced operational risk, increased the potential for errors, and created bottlenecks when it came to shipping software updates.
  • The "Live Migration" Dilemma: Business-critical applications needed to be migrated into a new environment with minimal downtime to daily global operations.
  • Tangled Permissions & Governance: Decades of organic growth had resulted in complex, ungoverned access controls. Fexco needed a complete overhaul of its security architecture to satisfy stringent international compliance and data sovereignty laws.
  • Hybrid Networking Friction: The new cloud framework had to link securely with existing legacy infrastructure across different platforms without exposing internal networks or creating vulnerabilities.
  • Conflicting Observability Needs: Out-of-the-box monitoring wouldn't suffice. The business required security and compliance logs to stream exclusively to one auditing platform (Splunk), while day-to-day operational metrics needed to route to another (Grafana)—all without duplicating data or inflating cloud costs.
The Solution

Searce worked as an extension of Fexco's internal teams, blending architectural depth with creative problem-solving to design a governed GCP "Landing Zone" (a highly secure, pre-configured cloud environment). Rather than standardizing through rigid templates, the engineering strategy was tailored to intelligently mitigate the risks.

Searce refactored Fexco's core data warehousing (BigQuery), business intelligence (Looker), and application logic workflows into fully automated, version-controlled delivery pipelines. Moving away from manual execution meant every single code deployment became repeatable, predictable, and fully auditable.

  • Intelligent Hybrid Networking: To bridge the hybrid environment securely, Searce implemented complex Azure VPN integrations utilizing Border Gateway Protocol (BGP) routing. This safely linked multi-cloud environments together, keeping internal structures hidden from the public internet.
  • Untangling Identity Management: The team systematically mapped out years of legacy user permissions, implementing strict, centralized identity access policies. This drastically reduced the surface area for misconfigurations or unauthorized access.
  • Smart Log Routing: To solve the split-observability requirement, Searce deployed an intelligent collection agent (Grafana Alloy). This acted as a smart traffic cop—automatically filtering, segmenting, and routing security logs straight to Splunk and operational metrics to Grafana Cloud, ensuring zero data clutter and optimized platform costs.
The Impact

The modernization transformed Fexco's network infrastructure to one that is built for speed, scale and security and visibility.

  • A Foundation for Immediate Innovation: With a fully governed and secure cloud foundation, Fexco can now onboard future financial products and teams in days rather than months, completely eliminating traditional infrastructure lag.
  • De-Risked Enterprise Operations: Removing manual steps from data pipelines wiped out human-dependent release risks, allowing engineering teams to ship features with total confidence.
  • Uncompromising Compliance: Centralized logging, ironclad access control, and automated infrastructure-as-code mean Fexco remains audit-ready and fully compliant with global financial regulations.
  • Real-Time Executive Visibility: Fragmented monitoring was replaced with a centralized, split-lens view of system health and security events, giving executive leaders real-time insight to act quickly.

"The team from Searce were true experts in their field and highly responsive to every query and challenge. They strictly adhered to our project schedule and delivered thorough handover sessions, making the entire collaboration a truly great experience."
