Transforming Telecom: Secure Cloud Foundations and Data-driven Growth

Author: Avdesh Kumar, Director – Cloud Engineering, Searce

The telecom industry is on the verge of a major transformation. With the rise of 5G, AI, and increasing customer expectations, operators are under pressure to modernize legacy systems, unlock real-time insights, and deliver innovation at speed. But transformation at this scale isn't just about technology, it's about rethinking how everything works together through intelligent software modernization services.

At Searce, we help telecom organizations reimagine their cloud and data strategy through a practical, engineering-first approach. Our software modernization services and platform engineering expertise ensure that the transformation journey is secure, scalable, and value-driven.

From legacy systems to agile Platforms

Many telecom providers operate on decades-old legacy systems. While these systems are deeply embedded in business operations, they're often rigid, slow, and costly to maintain. That's where software modernization services come into play, helping transform outdated architectures.

For one major telecom player, we designed a microservices-based platform that modernized critical workflows, including customer service and loan management systems. By deploying modular architectures on the cloud and building CI/CD pipelines, we reduced release cycles and significantly improved system availability. We also embedded observability and event-driven communication, ensuring high resilience even during peak load times. Furthermore, we extensively leveraged Ansible playbooks for managing open-source databases, enabling a cloud-agnostic environment with consistent automation and portability.

Empowering developers with platform engineering

Innovation doesn't happen in silos; it happens when teams can move fast without friction. In one engagement, we helped a large telecom engineering team overcome deployment delays caused by manual approvals and fragmented infrastructure provisioning through platform engineering best practices.

Our solution was a self-service platform engineering framework that gave developers the autonomy to spin up compliant infrastructure in minutes. Security, logging, and cost controls were built in from the start, allowing development teams to ship faster while staying within enterprise guardrails. The result was a 40-50% acceleration in application delivery, with enhanced governance and fewer security escalations. These outcomes directly contributed to cost optimization goals and improved operational efficiency.

Building a unified, intelligent data layer

Telecom operators generate massive volumes of data across network performance, customer behavior, billing, and more. Too often, however, this data is trapped in disconnected systems that make real-time insights a challenge. Data modernization is the key to overcoming these challenges.

We partnered with a leading telecom firm serving over 100 million users to design and build a modern, scalable data platform. As part of this engagement, we successfully migrated hundreds of data pipelines to Google Cloud, leveraging PaaS services such as Dataproc for big data processing and Cloud Composer for workflow orchestration. Given that many of these were transient workloads, we implemented automation to dynamically create and manage the required resources, ensuring efficiency and cost optimization.

To further enhance the platform's capabilities, we heavily utilized GPUs to supercharge their recommendation engine, enabling faster and more accurate recommendations for end users.

Establishing secure, scalable cloud foundations

A modern transformation journey starts with the right foundation — one that's both secure and built to scale. We help telecom enterprises set up enterprise-grade landing zones that enable seamless cloud onboarding across teams, while embedding security and compliance from day one.

These landing zones standardize IAM configurations, network boundaries, logging and monitoring practices, policy enforcement, and cost visibility across environments, all through automated pipelines. Teams gain autonomy to build and deploy, while leadership retains visibility and control.

Telecom networks often operate massive private infrastructures that exceed traditional RFC1918 IP ranges. To address this common industry challenge, we leveraged overlapping IP strategies combined with Hybrid NAT Gateway and GKE IP masquerading, enabling seamless connectivity without exhausting address space. This solution proved highly effective in complex enterprise environments.

This approach has helped clients accelerate cloud adoption timelines, gain cost insights, reduce risk, and scale with confidence across their business units. It also contributes to strong governance practices and a high level of FinOps maturity, supporting both cost optimization and operational excellence. In one instance, by reviewing insights from custom dashboards and implementing lifecycle management rules, the customer was able to achieve a 70% reduction in object storage costs. The savings were substantial, especially at a scale involving tens of petabytes of data.

Industry-tailored frameworks that accelerate transformation

Speed matters — but not at the cost of stability. That's why we've developed reusable building blocks and accelerators that are purpose-built for telecom use cases, aligning with software modernization services and platform engineering standards.

These include:

  • Policy-compliant IAC infrastructure templates for faster cloud onboarding
  • Standardized CI/CD pipelines with logging and observability baked in
  • Custom Dashboards for cost governance and cloud spend visibility
  • Data lineage and access control integrated into every layer
  • Secure, compliant landing zones to scale cloud migration safely and efficiently

With these frameworks in place, our clients gain a faster path to value without reinventing the wheel each time. Whether the goal is legacy system overhaul or cloud migration readiness, we deliver tailored, outcome-driven solutions.
